Julie Mason, PhD

Julie Mason is the Director of the Division of Science Policy Coordination, Collaboration, and Reporting. In this role, she leads a team of professionals to coordinate NIH policy engagement within and across federal agencies, including the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, the National Academies, and others. Her team also oversees legislative matters and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) policy fellowship program at NIH.

Previously, Julie served as Deputy Director of the Office of Science Policy, Planning, and Communications at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). There she advised NIMH leadership and led teams to plan and communicate research policies and programs to a wide range of audiences. Prior to NIMH, Julie was the Associate Director of the Center for Cancer Training (CCT) at the National Cancer Institute (NCI). There she developed, implemented, and evaluated extramural and intramural cancer research training and career development programs. Prior to CCT, she served as a Health Science Analyst in NCI’s Office of Science Planning and Assessment.

Julie earned a Ph.D. in pharmacology and toxicology from the Medical College of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth University. She holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Allegheny College, and she completed her postdoctoral fellowship at the NCI studying brain metastases from primary breast cancer.
