Under the Genomic Data Sharing (GDS) Policy and its predecessor, the Policy for Sharing of Data Obtained in NIH Supported or Conducted Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS), NIH-funded investigators are expected to submit human genomic data from studies that fall within the scope of these Policies to the NIH database of Genotypes and Phenotypes (dbGaP) or other relevant NIH-designated data repositories such as Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO), Sequence Read Archive (SRA), or the Cancer Genomics Hub.

NIH has received human data submissions primarily from academic institutions (70%), with additional contributions from non-academic research or non-profit organizations (22%) as well as federal research agencies and state health departments (8%).  Seventeen NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs) have sponsored dbGaP study submissions.
